Travel is for you

CULTURE

What is culture, and how does it shape us? Our approach to studying culture is based on respect and an open mind, and a curiosity to explore the diversity and richness of different cultural traditions from around the world. Explore traditions and customs, languages, art, literature and cultural symbols from different countries and regions.

SOCIETY

Every society has its own set of values and beliefs, which determine how they function as a collective. We examine culture through a societal perspective, social structure, government, and history. How do different countries interpret social hierarchies, family roles, ethics, behavior, and laws?

FOOD

With the help of our well-stocked student kitchen, we have the opportunity to learn about food from around the world in a fun and hands-on way. Learn how to prepare different culinary dishes, while learning about regional ingredients, traditional cooking techniques, and the history of food from other countries and cultures. Food is an important part of cultural identity, and exploring this topic is an exciting way to understand other people. And of course, we get to eat the delicious meals together!

TRAVEL

Leaving your comfort zone to travel to other countries is the best way to experience new cultures. At Reiseliv, we travel to the East Coast of the United States for 10 days to experience some of the best food, museums, and cultural landmarks in the world. We will immerse ourselves in the culture of the United States, while learning about its history and traditions. The influence of the United States on global culture is undeniable, and learning about it firsthand is a powerful way to understand how international influences affect our daily lives. We will also travel on a city tour in the fall.

GEOGRAPHY

Geography is a fundamental factor that influences the development of culture, shaping everything from daily life to social structures and values. WHERE in the world you live has a major impact on HOW you live. We study the role of geography in culture, and this helps us understand different ways of living. We cover topics such as: environment and natural resources, climate change, topography and borders and conflicts.

HUMANITY

What does it mean to be human? All people want the same things: love, security, community, and purpose. When we study different cultures and societies, we can draw parallels to our own lives. This allows us to develop empathy and understanding for others, and allows us to break down the barriers of “us and them,” or “different than.” One way to create a more peaceful world for ourselves and future generations is by acknowledging our similarities, rather than focusing solely on our differences. Friendship, goodwill, and a bedrock of genuine curiosity guide our exploration of other cultures and people.

The year is divided so that we have three line days a week, except for five weeks (the line weeks) where we are on tour the whole week. (two-three weeks in the spring)

This is happening

The year at Reiseliv also offers a city trip , as well as a 10-day trip to the East Coast of the United States, where we also visit Washington DC. However, we don't have to go far for great experiences. Hallingdal Folkehøgskule is located in one of the country's largest tourism regions, with beautiful mountains just on the doorstep. Taking part in nature experiences through outdoor activities is both fun and environmentally friendly, and an important part of the year at Reis. What do you say to, for example:

  • Rafting
  • Climbing
  • Canoe trip
  • Days on the alpine slopes and on the many cross-country trails in Hallingdal
  • A simple hike in majestic nature can also be a great experience!
  • We also make several visits to local businesses in Hallingdal – such as ski resorts, museums and event companies.

During this year, you will gain knowledge about tourism; you will learn about the history and place of tourism in modern society, our motivation for traveling, tourism's social responsibility and how we can make travel as sustainable as possible.
