Outdoor activities Norway
Sleep under the stars, experience the Northern Lights up close or hike on secluded trails? Line trip to Svalbard in April/May.
Welcome here if you love to go on trips. With us you will have the opportunity of a lifetime to experience how incredibly varied and beautiful it is in this country we call Norway. We start with tinder angel at the edge of magical Lofoten, continue in Jotunheimen with glacier and climbing courses under Galdhøpiggen, paddle through wild Femundsmarka, conduct an autumn sail up the west coast and end in May with a 10-day midnight sun expedition in Svalbard with sledges and kites. All of Norway is put to use!
During the winter - from November to May - it's mostly about skiing/boarding and winter outdoor activities. Summit trips to Jostedalsbreen and Hallingskarvet, snow cave/igloo courses on the Hardangervidda plateau, ice climbing, kiteboarding and avalanche courses in the Hemsedalsfjella mountains and much more.
All these trips obviously involve a lot of travel. We use trains/minibuses when we are out and about, and place great emphasis on acting sustainably and considerately along the way. Our ideal is to avoid leaving lasting traces in nature."

In late April we pack the sleds with everything we need for our final trip. The journey goes north to Svalbard at 78 degrees north. There we will live in the wilderness with mountain skis, tents and primus for ten days and experience the Arctic wilderness at its best. Through valleys, over glaciers and up on peaks. In the bright nights we take turns keeping watch over polar bears while the others sleep, - in the even brighter days we are on the way ahead of the sleds towards the next campsite.
Remember to have this ready when you start school:
- Valid passport for at least one year in the future
- Travel insurance
- European Health Insurance Cards

Teacher
Arne Myksvoll is a teacher at Friluftsliv Norge. He grew up in Bergen, and has extensive experience as an outdoor teacher at folk high schools in Sogndal and Bømlo in addition to Hallingdal Folk High School. Arne is educated in sports, outdoor life and science at the colleges of Telemark and Sogn og Fjordane and the Oslo School of Sports and Health Sciences. Our outdoor teacher is interested in most forms of outdoor life, but enjoys being in the winter mountains the most.
Motto: Go for a walk, in harmony with nature!
If you have any questions about Friluftsliv Norway, you can contact Arne at arne@hallingdalfhs.no/tlf. 46916040.
Norway is not the place for world champions. It is fine here if you are in generally decent shape. The most important thing is that you want to explore the nature in Norway together with good hiking friends. Hallingdal is in the middle of the buttery for most outdoor activities, - just a short trip out and we are off. It is a little further for sailing, but if we want to go to sea we take the train to Bergen and sail out from there. When the snow comes in October/November we have countless ski trips to choose from; summit trips in Hemsedalsfjella or Jotunheimen, long trips with sledges and kites inland to Hardangervidda or Skarvheimen, - we live in the middle of the possibilities!
So what's the point of all that farting around Norway?
We believe that everything you experience and everything you do affects you further in your life. That it creates fertile ground for thoughts, opinions and attitudes that will help shape you, and indirectly also the people you meet on your way. Here we think that the forest and the mountains must also be given a little bit of a place - we simply want to facilitate that good nature experiences and hiking experiences are included further in conversations and decisions, discussions and choices for our future.
Welcome to a year of outdoor life at our folk high school here in Gol!
