Zoo keeper - South Africa

This is the line for you who love animals! This year will give you unique experiences with many different animal species, from reindeer to cheetahs! Maybe you dream of going full speed with a dog sled, or close contact with lynxes and snakes? On the Animal Care Line you will have that dream come true, but with the magnificent nature of Hallingdal as the setting. On our line trip to South Africa you will be able to meet animals such as leopard and zebra up close, and maybe even swim with elephants!

We spend time both at Langedrag and in Bjørneparken, as well as at local farms, stables, horse centers and dog boarding. The days are varied and exciting! You will be involved in, among other things, herding and gathering sheep, caring for reptiles, milking, dog sledding, herding reindeer, and you will have the opportunity to work with cheetahs and servals in South Africa.

You will also get to join in training various animals such as dogs, goats, donkeys, reindeer and calves. We look at "kind" training methods such as shaping, clicker and husbandry, training animals should be fun for both us and the animals!

During the year we will cook food based on locally sourced ingredients and traditional cooking. We will both make cheese and cook dinner together.

In addition, we are going on great trips. Skiing, canoeing, climbing and cycling await. The highlight of the year is probably the trip to South Africa, where we visit the Cheetah Experience. Here you really get up close and personal with wild animals. The feeling of sitting with your hand on the back of a cheetah grazing is very special, and here you will have experiences that will leave a mark.

We also have plenty of time to socialize and enjoy ourselves. A year with us should inspire and, not least, give you space to reflect on who you are and what you want.

Welcome to an exciting year in safe surroundings at our folk high school here in Gol!

Practical information

Animal care is for those who want to get up close to various animals, both in Hallingdal and through a trip to a country in Europe. The year is divided so that we have three line days a week, except for four weeks (the line weeks) where we are on tour the whole week.

Price for the school year 25/26:

Price all year round : NOK 147,000

Price half-year course winter/spring: NOK 78,000

The loan fund provides a loan of NOK 151,690 for the school year 25/26 . 60 percent of this sum is a loan, 40 percent is a loan that will be converted into a scholarship when you are approved for your year at folk high school. To have a loan converted into a scholarship, you cannot have undocumented absences that exceed 10 percent.

Compared to a year of study, a year at a folk high school is cheaper. Everything is included; food, electricity, internet, rent, academic activities and travel. On some line trips you buy your own lunch.
